Leaders are in the spotlight now more than ever! We are seeing examples of Exceptional Leadership and, well there’s some not-so-great leadership out there too. Now is the time to stop and reflect on the leader you have become. What kind of leader do you want to be? And how are you looking after yourself, like really….looking after yourself.
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching global executive leaders for the past decade. It’s been a wild ride and I feel like I’ve seen it all, but these times are tough and leaders are experiencing fatigue on a mammoth scale. There’s change fatigue, worry fatigue, economic security fatigue, dealing with other peoples “stuff” fatigue, seriously this is fatigue like we’ve never known.
So how are you going with it all? What are you doing to look after your physical and mental wellbeing? Who is supporting you? Who are you off loading too? Is it who you should be offloading too?
When you add grief to the day-to-day role of a leader, is it any wonder we are feeling fatigue. Some of us are grieving for the life we used to have, the job we used to have, the travel we used to do, the freedom that we once had, the loss of loved ones, or the distance that has been made so much more isolating due to border controls and lock downs. This grief is impacting the pressure and strain on leaders.
I encourage you to press reset and pause. Step out of the busy day to day, take time to sit under the tree and just be you for a moment. Not in a chanting kinda way, though if that works for you chant away. What do you need to do more of? What do you need to do less of? Who do you need on your team to support you? By that I don’t mean your day-to-day team, I mean your team behind the scenes, like your personal trainer, your counsellor, your best friend, your Coach, your Mentor – who is on your team. Who do you need in your corner?
Now is the time to lead with intention, not follow your default way of leading. Here are my tips:
- Look within and rate yourself – what are your leadership strengths and what are your opportunities to develop
- Look outward – what does your team and business need from you now
- Based on your responses to the above – who do you have to become to achieve this level of leadership
- What new thinking do you need – unless we change thinking we will just keep doing the same thing – change your thinking
- Who and what do you need to support you? Consider counselling, friends family mentors, Coaches
Keep focusing on PROGRESS not PERFECTION!
